Little Hands on the Farm
Since 2001, Texas Master Gardeners from across the state
have worked at the Little Hands on the Farm exhibit at the State Fair of
Texas. The goal of Little Hands on the Farm exhibit is to help children
understand how agricultural products get from farm to marketplace.
The farm is an interactive, fun filled
adventure for the entire family. When the children enter the farmyard
with their parents, they are given an apron and grocery basket to collect
their farm products. As the children move through each of the colorful barns,
Master Gardeners instruct and help the children complete their farm chores.
Each child plants seeds and harvests the
crop, milks the cow, collects the eggs, feeds the sheep and chickens and
eventually goes to the marketplace to sell the produce. At the end they are
rewarded for their hard work with a Texas product they buy at the country
store. Along the way, they learn fun facts about how plants grow and how farm
animals give us the products we buy in the store.
This is the only project where Master Gardeners from
all over the state participate together. Meet us on the farm at the next State
Fair of Texas.
