On the third Saturday in June of each year, the members of DCMGA
organize a vegetable, herb, fruit, and flower show held at the Bayless-Selby
House at the corner of Carroll and Mulberry in Denton. The show has a
twofold purpose: to support the local farmers who market their produce,
beginning in June, at this location, and to celebrate the growing
season by inviting the public to bring what their gardens are
producing. The show is open to any amateur gardener of Denton County,
regardless of age. There are 3 divisions: children, youth, and adult.
The contestants may enter all four categories: vegetable, herb, fruit,
and flower. There is no charge for entering. Ribbons are awarded to all
contestants: first, second, and third; grand champion, reserve grand
for each division and a best-in-show, chosen from all the top entries.
The actual setting up and organizing of the veggie show requires about
twenty Master Gardeners, who set up the registration and display
tables; then they work the show by registering the entries, seeing that
the entries have a uniform presentation, overseeing the placement of the
entries for judging, and packing up when the winners are announced.
There are three independent judges for the show. These judges are not
members of the DCMGA, whose goal is to make this show enjoyable and fair
to all who enter. Since the show’s inception, DCMGA has had the support
of the Denton City Council, the Commissioners’ Court, and Northstar
Bank. The show is organized and directed by the Superintendent, who is
a Denton County Master Gardener, and John Cooper, Texas Cooperative
Extension, Denton County. |
