The Junior Master Gardener program is an international youth gardening program within the University Cooperative Extension network. JMG engages children in novel, hands-on group and individual learning experiences that encourage a love of gardening, develop an appreciation for the environment, and cultivate the mind. JMG also inspires youths to be of service to others through learning and leadership development projects and rewards them with certification and recognition.
Currently the program has two levels with age relevant activities. Level 1, for grades 3-5, contains the Core Curriculum and covers the Golden Ray Series, Health and Nutrition from the Garden. Level 2, for grades 6-8, includes Operation Thistle: Seeds of Despair, Plant Growth and Development. Additional modules are being developed.

- This is a Wildlife Gardener activity demonstrating with kitchen tools, the different beaks that birds have and how the birds use them as tools to eat the specific foods in their diet.

- The JMG’ers learning container gardening techniques. They started with bulbs in the bottom and then pansies and some ivy so they will last a few seasons.

- Making Snakes–This is a Wildlife Gardener activity on reptiles. The JMG’ers created the snake of their choice using old ties stuffed with a coat hanger and stuffing.

- Making Toad abodes is a Wildlife Gardener activity. This provides a safe place for toads to reside in their home gardens so they can help control garden pests.
